Set up in joint collaboration with and active participation of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Indian Leather Development Programme (ILDP) under Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, National Leather Development Programme (NLDP), Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-Kanpur), and the State Government of Uttar Pradesh, through UP State Industrial Development Corporation (UPSIDC), this Institute is known as International Institute of Saddlery Technology and Export Management (IISTEM). It is intended to be made the centre of activity for addressing various problems which the saddlery industry is confronted with. This Institute will serve the purpose of providing a boost to the saddlery trade in India. 

Institute’s Courses

  • An exhaustive syllabi has been prepared for IISTEM by international experts to provide training to the young students and budding entrepreneurs and also to upgrade workforce’s skills with a view to attaining and maintaining skills equal to competing markets worldwide and also to keeping pace with modern technological advances.

  • The course programmes are designed for Operators, future Line Supervisors, Production Officers, Production Managers and Quality Control Managers.

  • Based on the recommendations of international experts the first batch of Quality Control Manger’s Course commenced from December 2000. Though this one-year course was to end by December, 2001, it had to be extended for further six months period.

  • The second batch of ‘Quality Control Managers’ started from 1st of January, 2002 which will continue until 31st of December, 2002. 

  • The three-year Diploma Course in Saddlery Technology and Export Management has been recognized by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and affiliated to the Board of Technical Education, UP. Students for this batch have been selected through Joint Entrance Examination conducted by the Joint Entrance Examination Council. The course is going to commence shortly.

  • Another course of one-year duration known as Basic Course equivalent to Industrial Training Institute (ITI) curriculum is also proposed to be conducted in near future. Necessary groundwork is in progress for getting the approval of the appropriate authority in the Government of India as well as in the State Government in this respect. 

  • This Institute also proposes to run separate short-term courses on saddle making both English style and Western style, harness making and bridle making. The duration of these courses would be four months each. Of these four months, three months would be exclusively devoted to practical/ theoretical teaching and one month would be devoted to on-job training in association with the industry. Thus it is envisaged that after getting four months training any fresh candidate would become proficient in making any product which he or she chooses. Freshers as well as those already working in the industry may join these courses. 

  • Besides, Short-term courses on various other aspects aimed at meeting the aims and objectives of the Institute will also be conducted in the days to come. Not only this, horse riding events and annual international trade shows for saddlery industry will also be organized in future and will be made a permanent feature of the Institute’s annual activities. 

  • Briefly put, the Institute will conduct the following courses to begin with:

    • Three years Diploma Course

    • One year Basic Course equivalent to ITI courses

    • One year course on Quality Control Manger

    • Short-term courses

Institute’s permanent premises
This Institute is running on the temporarily hired premises of ESIC’s Hospital Building at Jajmau. UPSIDC has constructed a Common Facility Centre in the newly developed Leather Technology Park, Banthar, Unnao which is about 8 km away from Jajmau on Kanpur-Lucknow national highway. This Common Facility Centre has been leased out to the Institute where it will be housed permanently. Civil construction of the building is completed. Interior works are underway which are expected to be completed shortly.
