India's Leather Garments Industry
- Leather Garments forms a significant segment of the Leather Industry in India. Leather Garments production capacity is estimated to be 16 million pieces annually.
- The Global import of Leather Garments declined from US$4232.43 million in 2002 to US$3739.77 million in 2006. India’s share has increased from 6.43% in 2002 to 8.26% in 2006.
- India’s export of leather garments touched US$343.99 million in 2007-08, with a share of 9.89% in India’s total export. In 2006, India held a share of 8.29% in the global import of leather garments.

- The major markets for Indian leather garments are the USA, Germany, the UK, Italy, Spain, France, Denmark and Netherlands. Nearly 80.27% of India’s export of leather garments is to the above countries.

- Major brands like Pierre Cardin, Tommy Hilfiger, Versace, DKNY, Hugo boss, Liz Claiborne, Ann Taylor, Nautica, Kenneth Cole, Charter Club, Daniel Hector are sourced from India.
- The different types of Leather Garments exported from India are jackets, long coats, waist coats/shirts, pant/shorts, motorbike jackets, industrial leather garments and leather aprons. The above varieties are for gents, ladies and children.
- India is now poised to make itself a major destination for global sourcing of Leather Garments. India’s position as the fourth largest global supplier of Leather Garments is only going to strengthen given the availability of quality raw material coupled with skilled craftsmanship.
- The Leather Garment industry’s accelerated development and growth is being aided by the ambitious capacity expansion & modernization plans of private industry and the Indian Government’s encouraging policy measures.
