Sub :Regulations concerning import of hides/skins/leathers
Dear Members,
Your kind attention is invited to the Council's earlier circular dated April 25
& 30, 2008 regarding the Notification dated March 28,2008 issued by Department
of Animal Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture, Government
of India, which specifies regulations on import of livestock products, including
hides, skins & leathers.
As informed earlier, the Council has been representing to the Government
regarding the problems caused due to the new regulations. In this connection, a
leather industry delegation comprising Shri Mukhtarul Amin, Chairman, CLE ;
Shri Habib Hussian, Vice-Chairman, CLE ; Dr. Zackria Sait, Convenor, Leather
Panel, CLE and Dr. K. Elangovan, Executive Director, CLE met Dr. Pradeep Kumar,
Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Ministry of
Agriculture in New Delhi on May 7, 2008 and apprised him of the implications of
the regulations on import of hides/skins/leathers.
After hearing the delegation, Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry,
Dairying and Fisheries assured the members that some remedial measures will be
instituted. The Council's representative in Delhi is following-up this matter.
We expect such remedial measures soon from the Government. This is for
information of members, at this stage.
