EAN India, a society under the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, is a non profit organization formed with the objective of assisting Indian trade, industry and related infrastructure in adopting the EAN International system for unique identification of products and services manufactured by trade and industry and is affiliated to EAN International, Brussels, Belgium, EAN India is represented on its management board by the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, and apex trade and industry associations like FICCI, CII, FIEO, ASSOCHAM, APEDA, IMC, BIS, IPP and Spices Board.

This GEPIR (Global EAN, UCC Party Information Reigster) service hosts information on each EAN subscriber which can be searched for by global companies (buying agents, retailers etc.) using the EAN/ UPC article number prefix allocated to each subscriber company on registration, for the unique and universal identification of their products. The GEPIR service links over 900,000 EAN number companies in 128 countries and is a powerful utility used for sourcing market opportunities globally. It is accessed through the Internet through a simple login into the website of the EAN host country and enables global companies source for buyers / sellers using EAN article numbers printed as barcodes on retailed consumer items worldwide.

This service is being offered in addition to core EAN barcoding services provided by 98 EAN organizations worldwide which enable unique and universal identification of products / consignments /companies and EDI implementation support using EAN.UCC global standards.

An extension of this service will also enable exporters host their product catalogues electronically using internationally XML web-based EDI standards, making them inter-operable with other catalogues across the world. This will be essential for companies planning to transact business electronically using B2B Internet Exchanges with their buyers / suppliers. The system will also permit consignment level tracking through use of unique consignment numbers (SSCC’s) by global companies at a future date.
