As we have observed the State Sales tax is levied and collected by the States while the Central Sales Tax is levied by the Centre, but collected by the States. The features of the earlier Sales tax regime are discussed here to create a basis for the subsequent sections where we would be discussing the features of the VAT regime from 1st April 2005.
